Newton Kitchen Addition Case Study: An 11-Foot Vaulted Open Plan
This Newton raised-ranch renovation shows how a carefully planned kitchen addition can improve more than one room. Colony Home Improvement expanded the kitchen, opened it to the dining and living areas, created an 11-foot vaulted ceiling, and added access to a new deck.

The Remodeling Goal
The existing kitchen was separated from the adjoining living spaces. The homeowners wanted a brighter, more open layout that would connect the kitchen, dining room, and living room while gaining additional workspace and direct outdoor access.
- Expand the kitchen with a new addition.
- Open the kitchen, dining, and living areas to one another.
- Create an 11-foot vaulted ceiling across the shared space.
- Add unusually deep counters for more prep and storage space.
- Raise the base-cabinet height to better suit the homeowners.
- Provide access to both a screened porch and a new deck.
Designing Around the Homeowners
The cabinetry and counters were not treated as one-size-fits-all. The design called for custom counters approximately three feet deep, creating generous work surfaces. Because both homeowners are tall, the base cabinets were installed three inches above standard height for a more comfortable working position.

Building a Comfortable, Efficient Addition
The new roof structure created the dramatic vaulted ceiling, while closed-cell insulation was incorporated into the building plan to support comfort and energy performance. Water lines were positioned behind the cabinetry, and the lighting and electrical work were coordinated before plaster and finish installation.
Finishing details included hardwood flooring, custom cabinetry, and a seamless stainless-steel range hood. Together, the addition and interior wall changes transformed several disconnected rooms into one cohesive gathering space.

Considering a Kitchen Addition in Newton?
A successful kitchen expansion has to coordinate structure, mechanical systems, cabinetry, lighting, finishes, and the way your family actually uses the space. Colony Home Improvement brings those decisions together through a single design-build process.
